What to Look For in a Therapist or Counselor:

Back

If you decide to seek counseling, it’s important to choose a therapist you’re comfortable with. Most reputable therapists will offer a short introductory session or talk with you on the phone so that you can see if working with them will be a good fit. Besides making sure that the therapist or counselor you choose is licensed in your state, look for these qualities:

  •  A good therapist listens and responds to the issues that you choose to share. A good therapist does not pry and is not judgmental.

  •  A good therapist asks questions instead of making assumptions.

  • A good therapist does not give advice. A good therapist can help you explore your options so you can choose the path that’s best for you

  • A good therapist does not talk about herself/himself. The time you spend in sessions is your time. A therapist who shares their own issues in the course of your therapy is not only taking away from your time, but is adding to your burden.

  • A good therapist will explain their methods and approach to treatment. They will answer questions about your diagnosis and treatment.

  • A good therapist will refer you to another qualified professional if they are unable to be of assistance. Some therapists specialize in certain types of cases or treatments (for example, working with adolescents, but not younger children). If they are unable to work with you, they will provide a referral.
